Topic of the Month: Self Esteem (March)

Learning happens best when it is done both at home and at school.  Below are many ways that you can help your child learn about the theme of  self esteem, through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it.

READ ABOUT IT – Here are some books to help you learn more about self esteem:

  • Dear Girl by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
  • Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon  by Patty Lovell
  • I Like Myself  by Karen Beaumont
  • Spaghetti In A Hot Dog Bun  by Maria Dismondy

PRACTICE IT – Create a positive self talk mantra with your child!  Together, come up with something positive to tell yourselves when you are facing low self esteem.  For example, “I am important.” or “I can do this!”  Write it on sticky notes or note cards to post around the house.  Practice saying the statements out loud daily.

TALK ABOUT IT – Here are some discussion points to help you talk about self esteem with your child:

  • What do you think self esteem means and why is it important?
  • If you could use 5 words to describe yourself, what would they be?
  • Name one thing you have done that makes you feel proud.
  • Is there anything about yourself that you don’t like?  If so, what is it?
  • Do you usually have positive thoughts or negative thoughts about yourself?
  • What is something you do that makes you feel good about yourself?
